Cancer is not one disease but refers to hundreds of different diseases. Often the only similarity they share is they are caused by the uncontrolled growth and division of cells. This is why there is no one test that can screen for all cancers. Early detection of cancer is a key pillar of longevity as early diagnosis often means a much greater chance of complete cure.
There are tests for specific cancers. For example, colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer, mammograms to screen for breast cancer, Pap smears to screen for cervical cancer, etc. The elusive holy grail for cancer screening is one test that can screen for every cancer. Although this still eludes modern medicine, we now have tests that can screen for multiple cancers with just a single blood draw.
These tests work by detecting small pieces of cancer DNA found in the blood; so multiple cancer tests can be done with a single tube of blood.
These tests are recommended for people who are above age 40 and have a family history of cancer or have a lifestyle that increases cancer risk for example smoking. These tests cannot be done for people who are pregnant, had a cancer diagnosis less than 3 years ago or had a blood transfusion less than 2 weeks ago.
No. You do not need to fast for these tests.
There are certain symptoms that doctors look out for that would make us think of the possibility of cancer. These include:
