Warts are flesh or pigmented colored lumps frequently found on the genital and anal region. They can be flat or lumpy and commonly described as looking like a “cauliflower”. Warts are not painful but they can sometimes be itchy. Warts are caused by an infection with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which is an extremely common STD.

There are several treatments for warts including:

  1. Creams
  2. Freezing (Cryotherapy)
  3. Laser removal
  4. Circumcision if the warts are numerous and on the foreskin

Warts can be prevented with the HPV vaccine. Even after a person has been infected with HPV Warts, taking the vaccine can reduce the rate of recurrence and also prevent infections by other strains.

HPV tests can detect cancer causing HPV strains but not wart causing strains. The diagnosis of warts is made by visual inspection. If a confirmatory test is required, the wart is removed and sent to the lab for microscopic inspection.
