Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

HIV PrEP is a medication taken regularly to allow one to lead a desired lifestyle while reducing the risk of getting infected with HIV. It is safe and does not need to be overly expensive. However, people on it require regular monitoring.

However, HIV PrEP does not provide protection against any of the other STDs. Therefore, even if a person is on HIV PrEP, using a condom is still recommended.

The 2 most common ways to take HIV PrEP are:

Daily

Taking HIV PrEP daily has the best medical evidence for protection against HIV. Only one single pill a day is required.

For patients on this regime, the recommendation is to have a HIV test and blood tests done once every 3 months. Also, screening for other STDs should be performed at least once a year.

Event Based

Event-based dosing for HIV PrEP means that a person takes the medication only before a potentially risky exposure.

It is important to note that no further exposure should be encountered after the medicine doses are completed.
