Sex drive can naturally change over time, and having less interest in sex for a short period does not necessarily mean that something is wrong. Stress, tiredness, changes in a relationship and other temporary factors can all affect sexual desire.
However, low sex drive in men may deserve closer attention when it persists, affects your emotional state or begins to influence other aspects of your health and wellbeing. In particular, it may be worth discussing with a doctor when you experience functional changes that extend beyond sexual desire alone.
If you feel that you are being negatively impacted by changes in your sexual drive, it is important to look out for key indicators and understand when to seek medical advice.
Low sex drive may be worth discussing with a doctor in the following situations:
A low sex drive may warrant medical attention when it persists for an extended period, does not return to your usual level of sexual desire or has no clear temporary explanation.
There is no single amount of time where a change in sex drive is considered abnormal. What matters is whether the change is persistent and unusual for you, or whether you can identify any reason. For example, you may notice reduced sexual interest during a particularly stressful period, and you may also notice an improvement once the source of stress has passed.
It may be worth paying closer attention if:
This persistent change can have a range of possible explanations, including hormonal fluctuations, side effects of medications, underlying health conditions and psychological factors. You should consider seeing a doctor if your sex drive remains unusually low without improving or there is no clear temporary reason for the change, as this may indicate that an underlying factor needs to be identified and addressed.
Low sex drive occurring alongside other changes in sexual function may be another reason to consider medical evaluation.
Some men may notice that reduced sexual desire develops with symptoms such as:
While these changes do not necessarily indicate an underlying medical condition, experiencing them alongside a persistent reduction in sexual desire is a reason to discuss your sexual health with a doctor. Their timing and pattern can help determine whether physical, hormonal, medication-related or psychological factors may be involved.
A change in libido may be more significant when it develops alongside other changes in your physical or emotional wellbeing.
Depending on the underlying cause, low sex drive symptoms may occur together with:
Assessing these symptoms together can help determine whether they may share an underlying cause rather than occurring independently.
Low sex drive can also become a reason to seek help when it causes ongoing distress, affects your confidence or begins to interfere with intimacy and your relationship.
This may include:
Differences in libido are common, including between partners. The more important consideration is whether there has been an unwanted change that is affecting your quality of life or causing ongoing distress. If it is, you do not need to wait for physical symptoms to appear before discussing the problem with a doctor.
You should consider speaking with a doctor if your low sex drive is causing ongoing distress, affecting your confidence or creating difficulties with intimacy or your relationship. Even without other physical symptoms, the impact on your wellbeing can itself be a reason to seek support and explore what may be contributing to the change.

A temporary change in sex drive is not always a cause for concern. However, when reduced sexual desire persists, occurs alongside other sexual or physical changes or begins to affect your wellbeing or relationship, it may be time to seek medical advice.
At Dr Tan Medical Center, Dr Tan Kok Kuan, our men’s health & sexual health doctor, can assess your concerns and explore possible factors contributing to a persistent low sex drive. Based on the findings, he can advise on appropriate tests, treatment or other steps that may be suitable for you.
